I received an email today from a respected educator on the topic of the effectiveness of homework. The author sites research that suggests that homework is not related to student success. I have read these publishings before; so I went the entirely different route and had a sit down conversation with my students. Here is what my students grades 7-12 felt. If the homework has meaning and they can see how it relates to the class then it has more impact. If the homework can be managed in a reasonable amount of time then it has more impact. If they had no clue what was going on in class homework wont help. It does though help for those who had the idea, lost it as they left the room and the assignment leads them into greater learning. My words, their sentement. We dismissed any discussion on I dont want to do it as that would obviously make it less effective. Now for the fun part. The research cited focused on time used on homework and student achievement not on is it truly effective. On a final note: homework is a way for parents to remain involved in the learning process as they can see what is being discussed in the class. I have my doubts on this research.
