I received this email today, Dear Captain Robert, Recently, I described your music to a friend who hadn’t yet discovered you. I told her that, in addition to the superb musicality of every member of Abney Park, you write protest songs. Protest songs clothed in Steampunk Victorian/science fiction vocabulary. She promptly went out and bought Circus at the End of the World. You have another convert. Re the subject line, Protest! It strikes me that the peoples of the Amazon basin benefited greatly from Sting’s interest in them and his visits there. More recently, David Beckham has shown the spotlight on the disasters occurring in the basin and the monstrous impact the Belo Monte mega-dam will have. On the other side of the world, there are people who could greatly benefit from a celebrity’s bright light of publicity: the Bushmen of Botswana. Yes, I know that Bushmen is a pejorative term, but it has become firmly attached to these folks and is not likely to be dislodged. Please read this, Robert: survivalinternational.org/tribes/bushmen Diamonds being discovered on one’s land is as bad or worse as sitting on oil deposits or living amongst valuable hardwoods. It’s a replay of what happened to Native Americans in the U.S. It happens over and over again around the world, and the consequences reverberate far into the future, in addition to making the lives of the people being impacted now quite miserable. I appeal to you to consider becoming the Bushmen of Botswana’s celebrity spokesperson. You have a formidable contingency of fans out there who can raise a lot of holy hell if stirred up. I urge you to stir them up. You might even want to visit Botswana. Give a concert in South Africa and then head north by northwest. Please! Sincerely, Kathy Kathy Jones (OldDocJones) Boulder, CO
