I recently got my hands on a prototype 8 3 8-wt. fiberglass rod made by Tycoon Tackle, a company established in the Keys in the 1930s by Frank OBrien, and that specialized in big game rods at a time when there were none to handle fish topping a few hundred pounds. The company has recently been adopted and rebooted by OBriens son, Tim OBrien, and production is ramping up. After casting it extensively and fishing it in calm and windy conditions, I can say that it casts beautifully in calm conditions, and is a ball to fight a big bass (even a small bass) on. The action is too slow, I think, for effective casting in the wind, but If an incredibly slow action excites you and youd like to own a piece of fly fishing history, give these rods a shot.
