I recently placed a new traditional cache in Estes Park, where I live. As per current geocaching guidelines, I asked the Town for permission, as the cache is on Town of Estes Park public land. Turns out, though, that I am the very first geocacher ever to actually ask permission from the Town to place a cache in Estes Park. It took over a week for them to say yes, and I apparently stimulated some serious discussion among our Town authorities. They are talking about creating a policy for allowing caches. It sounds to me as though they are not entirely happy with caches all over the place on their public lands. They do recognize the value of caching as a sport, tourist attrection, scouting activity, etc.; they just arent happy with willy-nilly dropped caches. I told them that I would be happy to help them with a policy for approving future cache placements, and discuss the issue with anyone there who might ask. I think I can handle this; in fact, I think that flooding Estes Park with messages might be the wrong thing to do right now. I do think, though, that we cachers need to be a little less cavalier about just dropping caches where we feel like it, and then just asserting that we have permission, whether we do or not. Clearly this has been happening. Id like to see the Town have a very generous policy for allowing caches, of course, and if they think we are behaving badly, we could have a problem on our hands. Comments? (Make them CONSTRUCTIVE, please. Were all in this together.)
