I recently posted something on Instagram in which I said my life feels like a novel. Every accomplished, full, compelling novel has unexpected twists and turns, moments when you arent sure whats going to happen next. So it is with life. There is no way to say this other than this: Three weeks ago I found out I have cancer. Despite my long-held belief that I am invincible, (superhero powers, I thought) I have been diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma. Early, but not as early as any of us would have liked. Not the kind of early where a mole is simply removed, leaving you to go about your life unchanged. The cancer has spread to the deep margins, and has mitosis, which means the cells are actively dividing and growing. The good news is that it is early, and Stage 1b. Frankly, it could be so very much worse. I have written a piece for Time which tells you not only how I discovered it, but what to look for. Please read it - this is the fastest-growing cancer globally, and the death rated havent changed in 30 years, yet it is so easily prevented. I am in excellent hands, surrounded by friends who have loved and supported me beyond anything I could have imagined. Life is going on, filled with good things - theater, this weekend in Nantucket, laughter with my favorite people in the world, and will likely go on for a whole hell of a lot longer yet. I will update you all here, but know that I am waking up each day enormously grateful for everything in my life, and not least, all of you, my wonderful friends and readers.
