I recently saw a post about improving hip flexibility and the recommendation was to lie on your back, knees bent with feet together, open the knees, and place plates on your knees to keep them open. I have seen people doing this at the gym. DO. NOT. DO THIS!!! Your hip flexibility is determined by two things. One, muscles, and two, the joint itself. That is, the shape of the bones (different for everyone), and the capsule around the joint. The capsule being connective tissue that holds the ball of the hip into the socket. It is reliant on being tight so that the joint doesnt dislocate. This stretch in particular is a straight up joint capsule stretch. So basically youre pushing your joint to the end of its natural range, putting weight there, and pushing. Sound safe?!?!! No! Your hip can become unstable, which can cause cartilage tears and/or joint damage. In really serious scenarios it can dislocate. Work within the range youre given. Obviously if you would like to stretch the muscles that is fairly safe (though possibly not effective but thats another discussion) but again, dont force it.
