I recently watched 2 video productions about the Neanderthal. I find it fascinating that although they both would be considered credible sources they come to radically different conclusions as to the die off of the species. In the BBC production the conclusion is that homo sapiens used tool making technology to overpower the neanderthal and therefore wiped them out in the approximately 10,000 years of there existence. The evidence presented appears to come from archeological sources and they present fossil specimens to support their hypothesis. In the documentary Neanderthal Decoded the hypothesis is that neanderthals disappeared through absorption and interaction. Neanderthal DNA fundamental to our immune system involving genes vital to our ability to fight off disease and produce human leukocyte antigens is present in modern human DNA. They make the cells that attack viruses and bacteria. Modern humans lacked this gene and would have been susceptible to some diseases. This study suggests that modern humans bred with neanderthal and as a result we all have a little bit of their DNA that may be protecting us from some diseases yet today. Both of the videos are available to watch on You Tube. Here are the links.
