I regret to inform friends, extended family and Valley Stream Central H.S. graduates of the death of one of my sisters, Dawn Mantrone. She passed away unexpectedly on August 10th, 2014 and due to the suddenness of her death and issues with her estate we have had to delay official notice until today: DAWN M. MANTRONE June 15, 1963 – August 10, 2014. The family of Dawn Mantrone, with hearts full of strength and love, shares the news of her sudden passing on Sunday, August 10th, 2014, at age 51. Dawn was the sixth of eight children born to Daniel and Albina Marie Mantrone. She grew up with her brothers and sisters in the community of Valley Stream, NY, graduating from Valley Stream Central High School in 1981. During her senior year of high school, Dawn lived in the Netherlands as part of the AFS Intercultural Exchange Program and returned from the experience fluent in Dutch. In 1985, she received her B.A. in English at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, spending one of her four years at university studying abroad in Italy. Following graduation, she went back to Italy and spent time there working as an au pair before returning permanently to the U.S. Back home, Dawn spent some years working as manager of a bookstore and as a self-employed writer/editor; however, she was eventually called to follow in her parents footsteps and, like them, became a teacher. Dawn received her Masters of Education, both Elementary and Special Education, in 2002 from the esteemed Bank Street College of Education in New York City. She found her permanent home as an educator after landing a position as a Special Education teacher at the Lowell School of Bayside, NY. She taught 3rd and 4th grade students at Lowell, and through her dedication and drive she helped foster in each of them a burgeoning love of reading and learning. Dawn was also a wonderful aunt to her two nephews, reading to them when they were young and entertaining them during their visits to New York. While Dawn would spend much of her time working on ways to help her students, who were like her children, she was also devoted to her cat, Giselle, whom she rescued as a stray kitten. Dawn touched the lives of many and she will be missed and remembered as a dear sister and aunt, a caring and giving friend and colleague, and a truly gifted teacher. In a final act of generosity, Dawn gave others a second chance at life through the precious gift of organ donation. Dawn is survived by her siblings, Bruce, Laura, Allison (late husband Don), Larry, Leslie (Gary), Tracey and Amy; and nephews Daniel and Samuel Holder. Her parents, Daniel and Marie, precede her in death. Arrangements for her cremation were made under the care of Leo F. Kearns, Inc. Funeral Directors, South Richmond Hill, NY. Her ashes were privately interred on Monday, August 18th at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, NY. A public gathering in celebration of Dawns life is being planned for sometime in November 2014 at the Maple Grove Cemetery, 127-15 Kew Gardens Rd., Kew Gardens, NY.
