I remain consistently in awe of the unstinting generosity of the people of Malaysia, mashaAllah! For the last couple months or so, Ive been using my toddlers love for baking as an excuse to make a few too many cookies and cupcakes... and since we cant eat them all by ourselves, weve been taking them to the Islamic center where Im taking classes. All we asked was that people donate a little to Syria every time they take one. I expected a couple of ringgits here or there - maybe the equivalent of a dollar. Instead, I have been repeatedly surprised and awed by how people will unhesitatingly give even 50 RM (roughly equivalent to $15)! This didnt happen just once or twice - its happened many times (I go to class about 3 times a week and take the goodies at least once). Today alone, people donated over 100 RM... and this hasnt been the first time that they did so. Having done fundraising in Canada as well (on a similar small scale), the difference is astounding. Whereas people back home would sometimes try to snag an extra or quibble over a few cents (even though its all going to charity!), the people I have come across here in Malaysia will refuse to take without giving over and above what was respected. Once, an older woman asked for a cookie and I didnt even tell her about the donating part, I simply told her to take whatever she wanted. Yet as soon as she saw others giving, she insisted on getting her purse and giving us every single coin she had! Truly, the spirit of sadaqah is alive and well in the (Malaysian) Muslim Ummah - may Allah increase them all in ajr and barakah in their rizq, their families, and their faith, ameen. And may the rest of us be blessed with a similar sense of selflessness, ameen.
