I remark at least once or twice a year on the fact that what we call modern poetry can be traced to a definite start (and that would be around 105 years ago, which makes the word modern grow more and more interesting in a quaint way) in a definite place in England. It is well-known that one of the key people in giving birth to that then-new approach to composing a poem was Ezra Pound but, in fact, he joined the little group after its start. It was initiated by T. E. Hulme and a couple of others. Hulme is a character that it is difficult to embrace for various reasons, including his later touting of fascism. He did leave us some interesting poetry from that early time beginning in 1909, though. ... and ... how many people know that his inspiration to write his first poems came from living and travelling in Canada for a short while? The first time I ever felt the necessity or inevitableness of verse, was in the desire to reproduce the peculiar quality of feeling which is induced by the flat spaces and wide horizons of the virgin prairie of western Canada. T. E. Hulme Heres an interesting article about Hulme and if you look at it, you get to read one of his poems: huffingtonpost/oliver-tearle/t-e-hulme-poet_b_5009976.html
