I remember being 18 years old and working at a restaurant. I had requested 4th of July off about 2 months in advance to spend with my family. The week of, my schedule came out and they made me work. The day of I decided family was more important and I quit my job about 3 hours before my shift. I remember picking up my pay check and the manager telling me I was irresponsible and asking me if I had ever had a job before (I did, and I was good at it!) I picked up the check and as I walked away she told me, Good luck getting a job acting like that. 1 week ago I had a conversation with a woman Im teaming up with to do a very big project. It will potentially be huge and keep me busy (busier than usual) all year. When designing our schedule she said to me, We make our own schedules and I dont want to mess that up, so this has to work for all of us. To think, I got my dream job, working with AMAZING people, working the hours I want, acting JUST like that. My point? Be free. Do what makes you happy. You get nowhere doing exactly what they want you to do and everywhere doing what makes your heart happy and what you know is right. And if youre a struggling photographer reading this right now- I promise you, if you have passion, you cant fail. AJBC for me isnt entirely about pictures. Its about opportunities, creativity, and most of all dreams. This year has showed me that more than ever. Ive also learned while all of you help me shape my dreams by supporting me, I get to turn around and help you watch your dreams come to life with photographs. Thats more important to me then making you feel pretty, I want to make you feel alive. I love that with AJBC its a full circle of giving a taking. What other job could I do that in? Nowhere that chooses to serve shitty, overpriced food on a day thats meant to be with your family.
