I remember growing up and learning about the Holocaust, and wondering how it was possible that the German population could turn a blind eye to the genocide happening in their backyards. Immense fear, blind nationalism, and a well-oiled propaganda machine somehow made the murder of thousands- and eventually millions- of men, women and children completely acceptable, unavoidable, and perhaps even necessary in their eyes. They thought they were saving themselves by eliminating those who were seen as a threat to their future. In the case of Nazi Germany, this threat was the Jews. I am horrified as I read about what is going on in Gaza right now. Men, women and children being killed in their homes, in hospitals, in schools. But what is even more horrifying to me is the blind support for this massacre that I am witnessing from so many of my Jewish brothers and sisters around the world. We grew up saying, never again, never again will we allow a mass genocide to be perpetrated upon our people. What a horrible irony that the very state which was dreamed could heal the legacy of concentration camps and gas chambers is now engaged in this murderous rampage. We always wondered how people could sit back, watch and even support the mass killing of innocent civilians. History is repeating its self as we speak. Wake up, family. Open your hearts. See beyond your fear. I love you.
