I remember the winter of 1980-1981. I had just left home, and had no winter jacket, just a lightweight lined windbreaker. I had exactly $425 to my name, which was quickly reduced when I paid my $80 rent. It was January, and I took a job at an electronics repair shop called Duo-Sonic where tube amps were serviced along with terribly designed Sears stereos, to which I was unfortunately assigned. I was making $3.50 an hour. It was a warm winter so I survived easily, despite my 140 lb frame. Tonight Im reminiscing because Ive got my deck door open at my apartment and the wind blows in so hard up here on the 8th floor that I can flush the neighbor smells out of the hallway by opening up the hallway door, and Rex wanders in and out, sometimes to the deck, sometimes to the hall where he sniffs all of the creatures in all of the neighboring units, and the whistling hum of the freeway covers up the sound of my typing. Typie typie as the motorcycles cruise late into the night, celebrating a wonderful warm fall of 2014. Man, 2014, I never thought about that year during my youth. Life apparently ended at 2001 in my early imagination. I should have planned more. Figuring 84 years like my dad, Ill likely live to see climate change start to eat the east coast. Dang.
