I remember when Acoustic Research was a good company... > Dear Michael, > I’m sorry, but the ARRX18G remote will not work on a Windows 8 or 8.1 > operating system. It is only compatible with Windows XP or Vista. > Since this remote has been discontinued for some time, there will be no > Windows 8/8. > We have an update for Windows 7 on CD-ROM that might work, but there > is no guarantee that it will. In addition, the update will not work with Internet > Explorer 8 or 11. > Thank you for using Audiovox Electronics. > Ed. > Customer Service Dear Ed, You are being serious arent you? I hope they are paying you a lot to talk such utter nonsense. Lets look at this with a historical perspective: The product that cost nearly $300 has a copyright of 2009 on the retail box. By that time, Windows XP was 8 years old and the short-lived and ill-fated Vista was at end-of-life having come out in 2007. Windows 7 had been released at this point and seemed to be doing well. I would assume that you expect the expensive and relatively well-designed remote control to be useful for at least a few years, so therefore the current version of Windows (which as we have seen was Windows 7) should have at least been supported for a couple of years, which would have taken us well beyond IE8. Since this isnt the case then I can only assume that back in 2009, your company deliberately sold an expensive consumer product in the full knowledge that it would be a useless brick pretty much the year it was sold. Whats more, the product is still to this day being sold new on Amazon and other retailers. Incidentally, telling me that a remote control that is not even 5 years old yet is old enough to have been discontinued for some time is frankly insulting to me as a customer, and utterly ridiculous in terms of technology - Are you listening to what you are saying? A four and a half year old universal remote control with a price tag in the hundreds of dollars is obsolete? Say it out loud, call your father and tell him that and see what he has to say. Thats one of the most insane things I have heard this year; and this year has been a doozy of insanity! I am curious... Did you pay for that Better-Business accreditation? Because I cant see how on earth you ever earned it! Although I suspect this will be futile, can you point me at the Windows 7 CD so that I can waste even more time and energy trying to get this thing working. Thank you. Incidentally, and I am not sure why I am asking because I am pretty sure that I already know the answer... Is there any other way of programming this colourful brick without using your pre-obsolete software?
