I remember when Chris was about two years old, I took him to visit - TopicsExpress

I remember when Chris was about two years old, I took him to visit my mother in NJ. Chris and I took a ride to the local pharmacy while my mother was at work. I had a set of her house keys which were separate from my car keys. It was a sunny summer day. Chris was happily sucking on a wowwypop in his car seat in the back of the car. I pulled into the parking spot in front of her house, made sure the windows were all up, turned the car off, searched for the house keys in my purse, got them in my hand, got out of the car, and walked toward the back to get Chris. The back car door was locked. I tried the front passenger door. LOCKED! Raced to the drivers door..... F***ing LOCKED!!!! All the car doors were locked and there were my car keys.... In the cup holder well! I looked at Chris and he was smiling and happy with his lollipop! I didnt know anyone where my mother lived. I ran inside (before cellphones!!) and called the police. It seemed like it was taking them forever! In no time, a small crowd had gathered and I could see confusion starting to show on Chris face! I was trying not to show my own terror! I ran back inside and called the cops again! WHATS TAKING YOU SO LONG??????? I was ready to break the window with a rock!!! I could see sweat beading on Chris face! He gave up on the lollipop and was talking to me, but I couldnt hear him! I was shouting at him to lean up and try to pull up the lock on the door! NO GOOD! Finally, the cop shows up - lights flashing - siren screaming! By this time, my son is screaming in the car! The cop had a jimmy and was trying to unlock the door! JUST BREAK THE WINDOW!!! I dont give a shit! But he was positive he could avoid damaging my car! Eventually he got the door opened and I reached in and grabbed my son! The cop went to the trunk of his car and pulled out a teddy bear and handed it to Chris! My son turned away from the cop and started crying! WHAT A FRICKIN DAY!!!! But my son was safe! The car door lock was broken and it cost us @ $350 to fix - but you cannot put a price on the life of your child! Moral of the story: dont intentionally leave your children in the car just because you think its easier for you to shop (or whatever you are doing!) because it is NEVER easy to lose a child - especially because of your own stupidity! To this day, I am perhaps a bit overly cautious whenever I get out of the car - making doubly sure I have the car keys in my hand!
