I remember when.....I was working at Claydon (Suffolk), when due to a shortage of locomotives on the 2 June 1978, Ipswich Yard sent the morning trip out behind the yard pilot (08661). The main line was thrown into chaos, with Signalmen exchanging train a long time in section bells. Not surprising really because 08661 was struggling to do more than 12 mph. It took until lunchtime for the down services to return to normal. The problem was it had to get back to Ipswich, and delays to Up trains were also very large. Funny thing was that the Claydon trips were never short of mainline power again.
