I remember where I was. Hard to believe it was 13 years ago now. 6th grade (already very late in the day) I was walking into Mrs. Browns Math class as Brendon Liam Walsh was walking out of it. I hear it now, he said, The blew up the World Trade Center! Th blew up the World Trade Center! I did not know then how much this day would affect my life, the trajectory of a Country, and in total how much it would take things from the way they were to the way they are now. I remember a country stricken with grief but also blessed with unity. You did not have to know someone there that day for it to weigh heavy on your still to this very day. We all still mourn the souls taken into Gods hands on September 11, 2001. Friends, coworkers, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, but all similarly American. Such a tragedy galvanized our spirit of American pride and showed that some of our greatest values in this country of community and fellowship are intrinsically American. We lost over 2,700 souls I believe at ground zero alone, 343 of them First Responders, all heroes, all similarly American. The Pentagon and Flight 93 must not be forgotten as well. What has happened to us since that day? The patriotism, fellowship, and hands held to help one another have been replaced with division, hostility, pessimism, and in other words defeat. I am about to be 25, I am young, and I even realize how things were never the same after that day. When you begin to dedicate some time to reflect on what really happened that day it is hard, as an American, to not be overcome with a sadness knowing the transformation this country has undergone since that day. Our means to assure freedom have been at the cost of liberty. It is tough to take some time on this subject and not shed a tear. I will be honest with you, writing this post...I have. Our freedom afforded to us since the founding of this nation cannot be taken from us by the acts of a faceless enemy, events of cowardice and malice toward others based on religious background and your country of origin. We are American and that binds us all. We are all one state of mind, or at least I like to think so, and that state is the Stars and Stripes, Uncle Sam, Rosie-the-Riveter, an ice-swept night crossing the Delaware toward Trenton, Elvis Presley, Lady Liberty, the Declaration and the Constitution, John Wayne and Muhammad Ali, a fateful car ride through Dealey Plaza, who or whatever you identify as the American spirit because frankly my dear...I dont give a damn. Let us remember always the tragedy that befell this great Nation and live each day as Americans united under freedom and liberty, not division and hostility. Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth -George Washington
