I returned home too late to get tickets to the Woodward, Bernstein lecture tomorrow night at Trinity. If anyone has a spare, could I have it? I have a question I want to ask them if no one else does. I voted for Nixon in 72 but I never believed that something as risky as the Watergate break-in could be for something as trivial as Democratic campaign plans. Then I discovered that the Republic Party officials--Nixon, Party Chair John Mitchell, Texas Senator John Tower, and others--had committed treason by sabotaging LBJs Peace Treaty in 1968. US intelligence told LBJ that the Republicans had sent Anna Chennnault, widow of Flying Tiger hero Claire Chennault, to promise South Vietnamese officials that if Nixon were president he could get them a better treaty than LBJ or Hubert Humphrey could. LBJ kept the records, including telephone messages, but did not tell anyone except Humphrey and Republican Senator Everett Dirksen. LBJ told Dirksen that was treason. Dirksen said, Yes, it is. LBJ did not tell the media because there was such turmoil in the country that he feared revealing the treachery of the Republic leadership would result in riots and the destruction of the Republic Party. Nixon was elected and spent four years searching official documents for the records but didnt find them. Thats not a secret. Anna Chennault revealed the treachery in her autobiography, The Education of Anna. Seymour Hersh reported it hi biography of Kissinger, and Bui Diem, South Vietnams ambassador to the US reported it in his books. The official records are in the LBJ library in Austin, so its possible but someone else will ask the question. Some reporters believe that Nixon concluded they must be in the hands of Democratic leaders who could leak them and end Nixons presidency, and that was the reason for the break-in. I think theyre right and I would like to know if the two reporters who did the most to force Nixon out of office agree. If I dont make it, I hope someone else will ask the question and let me know the answer.
