I returned to my office and finished my notes. As I scribbled away - TopicsExpress

I returned to my office and finished my notes. As I scribbled away in Echos file, I couldnt help but think about Natasha and Ivan and how they acted toward each other. Natasha was a stickler for details. A by-the-book sort of person. That was why she was highly valued among the psych ward staff as one of the finest nurses the ward had ever seen. However, Natasha seemed to know she was the best. Before I came to the hospital, she had gone through being assigned to Grant, Meyers, then Farst. Neither one worked out for various reasons and I was next on the list after my probation period ended. So far, Natasha and I made a great team. But I knew nothing about her before she came to work for me. I paused with my pen poised above paper. Was that Russian? I asked myself outloud. Da. I speak Russian. I looked up and locked gazes with Natasha. The redheaded nurse was standing in the doorway. Come in. I told her. Natasha came in and shut the door behind her. Without an invitation, she settled into the wing-backed visitors chair in front of my desk and laid her dainty hands in her lap. I finished with the notes, put the file away, and put my pen back in the pencil holder. We need to talk. I said. Natasha met my gaze. What about, Doctor? About your behavior toward the patients husband. Natasha looked a little trapped by this statement. Like a caged animal. I could see she was starting to wonder what I was going to say. Natasha, I began, gently. youve been here a while. Since its inception, sir. she said, semi-proudly. And youve been with me since my probation period ended. I continued. And Ive enjoyed it, sir. she put in. I couldnt help but smile at that statement. Im glad. So, whats the problem, Doctor Sanders? I stood up and walked around the desk. The problem is that I dont know anything about you outside the hospital. Youve always been an enigma wrapped around a riddle slathered in questions to me. What do you want to know, Doctor? I want to know who you are. She blinked. Sir, how is this job-related? When I think youre going to be problematic for a patient and kin. I need to know, its there going to be a problem between you and Ivan Braginski. There wont be. Natasha said. Her eyes were sincere, but what I had seen in the ECT room suggested otherwise. Then what was that all about? I asked. Natasha hesitated. I rested my butt on the edge of my desk and waited with my arms crossed. Finally, Nat spoke. She told me about her childhood in Russia (the country) and how she was raised by a secret organization whom was mainly interested in creating spies. She told me she doesnt remember much outside of training but the KGB made her do things most would consider horrible. She then proceeded to tell me about the deception on the KGBs end and how she left their service, becoming a rogue spy where she did even more horrible things. A spy from another organization was sent to take me out, but he made another call. she finished. Another call? I asked. He realized my skill set could benefit the people he worked for and took me on, rehabilitated me, helped me see the error of my ways. Ive been trying to wipe red from my ledger ever since. How does Ivan work in? I asked. I didnt just end up on one radar. I ended up on multiple radars. Hundreds of government and non-government organizations sent agents to either kill me or recruit me. And . . . the Russian government? What got you on their radar? I took out some former agents of theirs. General Braginski was sent to apprehend me. She grimaced. He was the only person whom I couldnt defeat. He was successful, then? Very much so. He captured me and dragged me back to the Lubyanka building. There, they interrogated me. Lubyanka building? I cut in. Headquarters for the KGB. she explained. Some would say its more terrifying than the Gulag. I shuddered. I knew about the Gulag. They questioned me. Natasha continued. And when they were done, they convened to decide what to do with me. Way would they do with you? Kill me or send me to prison or a hard-labor camp. Really the options are endless. Oh. I escaped and fled the country. Not long after, I was recruited into the government agency I work for now. Which agency? Natasha said nothing. It occurred to me she wasnt at liberty to say. At this point, I wasnt sure if I was going to believe her. Alright, Natasha. Just tell me one thing, is Ivan going to take you away? I asked. Its possible he could but I doubt think he will. He said something about having spies that watch spies. I assume that means he knows what Ive been up to. she said. So, theres not going to be a problem between you two? No. Very well. I just hope not. I went back and sat down at my desk. Its almost lunch time, sir. Natasha reminded me. Thank you. Please go check on Echo. I told her. Yes sir. With that, she left the room.
