I rode my electric scooter to work today. This is actually the first day since college that I can say I did not commute via automobile or truck. The ride in took about 33 minutes including several GPS stops where I wondered why the heck my Navigator app wanted to send me over a busy and very steep grade bridge. On the ride back I chose my own path along the Park River and got home in only 21 minutes. At an average return speed of 15.4 mph, the only impediments were 3 or 4 red traffic lights. Aside from two awkward hill climbs where progress slowed to the point where I decided to pull my carcass off the seat and walk the scooter to the top, the whole experience was pretty cool. Now compared to the automobile travel routine instituted upon consultants since our move from East Hartford, I definitely prefer the scooter. By car it takes only 12 minutes to get to a parking lot a mile from my building, whereupon I have to wait up to 15 minutes to board a shuttle that has the same suspension system as say an 1867 stage coach. The total travel time is about the same, but Id much rather race turtles along a river bank than stand around in a sweltering parking lot waiting for a kidney bruising ride from hell.
