I said here that the government would lose face with this rushed legislation and many of its misplaced provisions some of which reduce terrorism by removing reportage of it on the pain of hefty fines... As this happens- some stupid student blogger messed up his life posting obnoxious things on the President and getting a 2 year jail term for his trouble. I didnt read it, but I generally dont like the kind of law that was relied on for this- something along the lines of insulting a public officer and undermining the dignity of their office.. sounds like an oppressive load of turd. Alai- someone I generally dont agree with- was in court the other day for undermining the President. Such arcane laws harm our democracy. Before a pliable court, there can be great leeway in interpreting what constitutes undermining a public officer or their dignity, and most of our so-called public officers undermine their own dignity and those of their offices anyway. What if I just observed that? What if I merely stated that a decision taken by the President was asinine and probably informed by petty and juvenile considerations of one-upmanship.. such as ramming bad legislation down our throats using the tyranny of numbers- would I be undermining the President? Would the President not have undermined the Presidency which is supposed to be a unitive force for the good of the country and permanently beholden to our Constitution? 2015 is here. Happy new year to you all. I hope sanity increases in these parts this year. And thank God and the security folks for the lull in attacks against Kenyans.. clearly with greater vigilance- under current laws, too- we can have the optimism that is starting to creep in in Mombasa.
