I said in my article that how AK deals with dissent will be critical to his perception as a credible public leader. There have been many reports of people leaving the party but this is the first one that I feel will be a real test of his leadership. For several reasons: (a) YY is within his inner circle, (b) YY is not quitting AAP, just resigning from his posts within the party, (c) YY has articulated his concerns very clearly - possible there is more background behind this that we are unaware of (there always is), but at the very minimum, these concerns should be addressed, (d) YYs primary concern seems to be the core competency of AAP that sets them apart from any other party - participative democracy - they want to implement this at the national level, but can it first be implemented within the party? A healthy participative process MUST involve dissent and also a fair way of resolving dissent and internal conflicts. Just to clarify, involving dissent does not imply putting every matter to a popular vote. That is the other extreme and leads to policy paralysis. We are now being asked to find the right balance between the two extremes, and that will define the term participative democracy. A true leader recognizes that, even with a crystal clear conscience and a rock solid spine, not all of his decisions will be right. A single person can never be an expert on everything. That is why good leaders surround themselves with teams of people that complement their own skills, and may disagree with them (even vehemently so), but their presence on the team is critical because they expose weaknesses in the leaders own judgement that can only be strengthened through the diversity of the team. It is extremely hard to make a diverse team function well, but the diversity is still critical for the quality of problem solving. I am very interested to see how AAP deals with this challenge because this incident has the potential to strengthen the party immensely. indianexponent/a-yardstick-for-arvind-kejriwal-and-aap-not-an-easy-one/
