I sat through the town hall meeting today, and I had no questions - TopicsExpress

I sat through the town hall meeting today, and I had no questions or complaints, so I did not speak. However. the more I thought about the discussion today, the more I felt a need to give my two cents. Since the meeting is well past over, what better alternative forum than Facebook? Most of the discussion seemed to be on musical style, which tends to have a generation gap. Let me start with the fact that Im well past the 35 year old median age of the community. I grew up in a very traditional church, with all of the traditional hymns. I have fond memories of my father humming Old, Old Path every Sunday morning while getting ready for church. I know all of the old hymns, and I like some of them. Others, not so much. I suspect that much of this is about familiarity. I am one of the people in the congregation who isnt singing on every contemporary song - not because I dont like it, but because I dont know some of them. Does that mean that we should stop singing unfamiliar contemporary songs? No, if anything, we should do them more, so that we gain a familiarity and appreciation for those songs, like we have for the old hymns. I think that we should open our hearts and minds to embracing the addition of contemporary songs to our worship, and each one of us make a point of actively learning and singing them. In a rare moment of profundity, I leave you with this one thought - If we put all of our focus on the format, we can lose sight of the content. Which is more important?
