I saw a meme all over FB a few days ago that made me sad. It made a connection between someone on a government assistance program and owning a smartphone. It also made me think. Its not easy to make ends meet, especially now. People that have been frugal all their lives are still struggling to take care of their families. Many of us live from paycheck to paycheck. Im sure that there are many people that you work with - that I work with - who are on assistance, or who are very close to needing it. For some, a smartphone is actually an intelligent, frugal way to get phone and internet service or only $40/month. Even the cheapest land-line service isnt that much less. Government statistics have shown that the food stamp program has a very small incidence of abuse. Interestingly, some of that abuse comes from wealthy people who have found a way to have their cake and eat it, too. Im not naive enough to believe that people dont try to abuse assistance. I get that. Im just asking my friends and family to try to see the face behind the people who need assistance. They may be your neighbors, friends and family. And they may be ashamed. Spare a kind thought for all of them, if you will. Ill get off my soap box now.
