“MAXIMUM EXPOSURE MUSIC HISTORY” With your host Bruce Hawes, Composer, of Interesting Words To Read, continues with the story: Carl Davis ~ The Founder of The Chicago Sound ~ “Chi-Sound” BH wrote: In 1934 Carl Davis was born into a musical family although he never learned to play an instrument. His talent and gift was identifying hit songs and then producing them. In the early 1960s and then the 1970s his talents flourished. It all started when Carl overheard a group rehearsing, the “Dukays,” that featured soon to be famous lead singer, Gene Chandler. That momentous rehearsal resulted in one the biggest hits of the 60s for Gene Chandler, “DUKE OF EARL.” During the two decades he acted as a manager, producer and talent scout for some the most prolific hit makers of the times including Curtis Mayfield, Major Lance, Jackie Wilson, Tyrone Davis, and the enduring singing group, The Chi-Lites. Early in his career he had worked as an assistant to Al Benson, a regional DJ, and he developed his unique talent of recognizing a hit song. He went on to produce the huge on the “Dukays” that was released on the very successful label of that era, Vee Jay Records that also had great success with the “Four Seasons and “The Beatles.” Carl Davis was right there in the mix with so many hit makers of the 60s and branched out producing one of Jackie Wilson’s greatest hits: “Higher And Higher,” and also the classic songs of the Chi-Lites, (Have You Seen Her) and (Oh Girl) and many others. Even producer/artist, “Baby Face,” had his start with Carl Davis’ Dakar Record label. Tyrone Davis’ was a favorite of Carl’s. Carl Davis leaves a music legacy that is full, rich, and memorable. And now his Chi Sound Label has reemerged artists, TL Williams. And Chicago has a new music queen: Yemi Marie. They are both outstanding artist. And Marshal Thompson, who has written his own memoir: “Last Man Standing,” has carried the sound of the THE CHI-LITES on into the 21st century with new recordings as well, including a terrific remake of a “The Chi-lites” song: “HOT ON A THING CALLED LOVE” produced by Georgie Porgie and Gus Redmond of Chicago with Marshall sounding better than ever. The past success of Carl Davis has left a long trail of hit music. And because of his success with so many classic recording stars, the future of this great city’s music scene, (the Chi Sound in Chicago), is going to be even greater… Also shared with: Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Joe Biden, Jill Biden, Hilary Clinton, President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, 成龍 Jackie Chan, Bruce Willis, Pharrell Williams, United States Air Force, United States Marine Corps, The United States Army Band, United States of Tara.
