I saw a pair of big black boots coming towards me, said Shahrukh Khan, 16, from his bed at Lady Reading Hospital. This guy was probably hunting for students hiding beneath the benches. He said he and his classmates ducked below their desks when four of the nine gunmen burst into their room. He tried to play dead after being shot in both legs, stuffing his tie into his mouth to stifle his screams. The man with big boots kept on looking for students and pumping bullets into their bodies, he said. I lay as still as I could and closed my eyes, waiting to get shot again. My body was shivering. I saw death so close and I will never forget the black boots approaching me – I felt as though it was death that was approaching me. His teacher was crying out with discomfort, having been shot in the hand. One of the gunmen then walked up to her and started shooting her until she stopped making any sound. On Tuesday night 132 pupils and nine staff members were dead, at the end of the eight-hour siege.
