I saw a youth on fire: Forty-six years ago today Jan Palach died as a result of wounds inflicted upon himself after he set himself on fire in protest against the occupation of his Czech homeland by Soviet-led troops. I have posted a previous tribute to Palach on a JJ fan page, but since he also gets a mention in North Winds, I thought Id also pay tribute here. This is the bronze death mask erected in his honour at the philosophy building of Prague University. The date indicated here, 16.01.1969. relates to the date of Palachs self-immolation; he died three days later.
