I saw an episode of Cosmos last night. This one was dealing with comets and of course Halley came into play but what I never knew was his close association with Newton and how that if Halley hadnt involved himself so much that we might have had to wait centuries before another brilliant mind could give us the mathematics and principles of gravitational forces along with the laws of motion. It almost looks like Divine intervention and I find that concept so outrageously funny because Newtons observations totally shattered superstitious religious beliefs of the time. Fundies like to point to Job 26:7 about God hanging the earth upon nothing. Newtons work totally shattered that concept with his work involving the mathematics of gravitational pull and the laws of motion which explain precisely and exactly the powerful forces that hold our planet in its elliptical orbit around the sun. Its hardly hanging on nothing! He also shattered the Bible based view that the earth was situated upon pillars and could not move. Its almost like God was angry at mans ignorance (or felt sorry for) and then decided to use a man like Newton to dispel these ridiculous notions. Of course many people today still refuse to acknowledge discoveries of science and stubbornly hold on to superstitions of the past propagated by religion so that it might have a following. Side note: Newton believed in God and studied the Bible extensively looking for secret codes and such that would give clues to the end of time, a search and endeavor that proved completely fruitless whereas his book, Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, revolutionized scientific thought of the physical universe. How do you spell irony? Smile.
