I saw an older lady today as she carefully made her way across the street. She was dressed in Value Village clothes and wearing heavy winter boots. It wasnt that cold. From her gait and the way she hung her head and looked around carefully, Id say she is mentally ill. She was headed for a shopping mall; perhaps to find an imitation of companionship. The lady looked like shes seen demons in her life and now toughs out a miserable existence with minimal welfare and prescription pills. She should be in a group home or mental health care facility. I thought of the billions of dollars that have been spent on stupid, useless and unnecessary gun control laws, prosecuting paper criminals, paying police officers to gather their evidence and paying Judges to hear a litany of charges of expired paperwork, lack of trigger locks at the proper time and possession of scary guns. We know that around $2B was wasted on the Long Gun Registry, not counting enforcement costs and not counting the cost and misery to everyone who was caught up in that pointless meat grinder. We dont know the ongoing cost of gun control laws in this country because those costs are kept hidden from us. Neither our professional politicians nor Big Police nor the chattering class on TV want to talk about that. They are either too afraid, too bigoted, too dumb or too interested in the status quo to dare open their minds. And so our $$$ in the hundreds of millions continues to be shoveled into those furnaces. The Long Gun Registry money alone could have paid for 70,000 low income housing units....20 hospitals.....places where the old lady might live out her life in safety, with people she can talk to. She could have a home. I am therefore profoundly disturbed by those who choose to feed their agenda or indulge their irrational, righteous fears instead of providing people like that old lady with at least the same care we require for our pets. Shame on you. Shame on all of you.
