I saw something really disturbing yesterday at Haleiwa: a well known local ex-pro surfer and shaper absolutely berating his son as they paddled out together. The little boy was obviously petrified of surfing on the outside, but his father was screaming at him that he was going out there. Dont want to go into what was being said because its so upsetting, but the boy wound up balling his eyes out as his crazed father continued his tirade in the lineup. I thought surfing was supposed to be fun for kids, a gift a father passes on to his son, a lesson given with love, guidance, and patience? You see lots of people like this now, who want their own John John, and its very disconcerting. Hey, these kids have to learn at their own pace, NOT YOURS, and if they dont like surfing, dont force it on them. These parents just dont get it. Ive lost all respect for this person, whom at one time I thought was a cool guy. Get your own life pal, hes just a little kid OK? Next time it aint just gonna be the stink eye either brah.
