I saw this morning that Bill Maher had mocked the WW II veterans who insisted on gaining access to the memorial, saying “They’re the greatest generation – nobody says they’re the brightest generation”. Yeah, I guess you’d have to be pretty stupid for more than 400,000 of you to get killed fighting a war, most of which wasn’t even on your continent. I’ve heard various political factions referred to recently in the media as “morons” and “sociopaths”, and at least been comforted that nobody had yet been compared to Hitler, which I had thought was bottom of the civility ladder. But I was wrong – this was so much worse – mocking a group of guys in the 80s and 90s who came to pay tribute to their friends who had died beside them while serving their country. My dad, who’s still around at 93, still talks proudly about his service in WW II. (Fighting back tears at this moment..) He’s not dumb, Bill. He’s a hero. And you’re an asshole for your comment.
