I see a lot of people citing the new study on low-carb diets as proof that there is a metabolic benefit for cutting carbs. Certainly a low-carb approach is a viable option for some people. However, the few studies that have been carried out where both protein and caloric intake have been strictly controlled have shown no differences in weight loss. The body of evidence indicates that there is no magic to the weight loss associated with LC diets; rather, its that they help in reducing total energy consumption and tend to keep protein intake higher when compared to traditional lower-fat diets (and thus positively influence TEF as well as preserve LBM). Heres a well-designed study showing outcomes when variables other than carb intake are controlled: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19720791 - Brad Schoenfeld
