I see that Unsung Musicals is doing a reading of I HAD A BALL in 2 weeks. If you havent seen this footage, drop everything and watch it, all 7.5 minutes of it. I dont care if it was a third-rate show – with a title number like this, its A+++ in my book. Leading the charge is one of the greatest voices and all-around talents ever to hit the Broadway stage, the insanely great Karen Morrow -- and backing her up is choreographer Onna White, absolutely killing with the fastest gang swing dance since forever, in her trademark high style, with Philip J. Langs sensational orchestration and Luther Hendersons fabulous dance arrangement. The killer drummer is like Chick Webb and Gene Krupa combined. Very little of the arrangement got on the album, so you have to hear it here (before they rip it down.) I can put up with the Middle-Eastern Gypsy-Jewish section because its followed by that epic counterpoint between Karen and her cast and her shattering finish. Color photos of the show reveal that the stage was ablaze with blues, pinks, greens, reds and yellows that dont exist in nature. Thats classic Broadway, youngsters – 8 times a week they knocked this sucker out, giving 150% on a slow day.
