I seen that Ruth Carter died. So thought I would post some memories I have of her. Blume wasnt big enough back in the mid 1970s so the city rented the old St Joe Elementary school next to the church for all the 7th graders. It was called Blume 7. Mrs. Carter was my history teacher. At 1st we all kind of made fun of her because she was kind of ditzy and scatter brained. But as the school year went on we all just loved her. Her room faced the corner of Pearl & Blackhoof. I sat clear in the back and would stare out the windows and not pay much attention. But that didnt last very long. Mrs. Carter one day asked me to answer a question which I should have known but was to busy staring out the window. When I didnt know the answer she said I think its time to do some moving around and moved me to the front row right in front of her desk. After she had settled all the moving around she came up to my desk and said to me I have a special interest in you and have a good feeling you are going to learn a lot in this class I remember one day she is running late and comes in the class room smelling like a cigarette. She rushes to her desk grabs a sheet of paper picks up a piece of chalk turns around and starts to write very fast on the blackboard. She is writing so fast and as Im following what she is writing it is not making any sense at all. She stands back and reads what she just wrote. She says well that makes no sense at all.Im writing about two different things in the same sentence So she grabs up the eraser and wipes it off. She picks up the chalk again turns around and puts the chalk to the board and just stands there for a few seconds. Then says now I forgot what I was going to write lol. But when it came time to learn she made it so much fun. One point in our lessons we went in local history. She taught us all about the Shawnee Indians and what this area was like back then. She would read out of old books about our area. Tell stories she had heard of her area of around Celina. One day she was talking about old cemeteries and told us that this very school set on a old cemetery. Of course this caused a lot of commotion in the room but she assured us the people were moved and all was ok. Being a 14 year old kid I really didnt believe her on this and thought it was just another one of her stories. But in the early 1980s my friend Mark Schaub was doing some excavating work in the parking lot and one evening brought home a piece of a old tombstone. Mark thought it was a odd place to find a piece of the tombstone and I told him of the story Mrs. Carter had told our class all those years ago. During the last week of school that year she called out 3 people to come stand in front of the class. I was one of them. We were the 3 kids she thought deserved recognition. I forget what the others did but mine was the biggest rise in my grade from the beginning of the year. I had started with a D- and had brought it up to a B+. She gave us each a sticker and a sucker and had the whole class give us a round of applause. Mrs. Carter was the 1st to ever give me a compliment like that and the last. But she really made me feel special and made history so much fun. I would run into her ever now and then after school and she would always have a smile on her face or laughing her laugh. She was one special lady and I was one of the lucky ones to be able to enjoy her for a whole school year. She will never be forgotten by this student. The world lost a wonderful person. RIP Ruth Carter
