I sense a growing hopefulness among my Republican friends these days, and I think I know why. They think they see better days ahead. They think that their party has an increasingly good chance to wrest control of the Senate and the White House away from those dastardly Democrats. Perhaps that scenario will play out -- who knows? Stranger things have happened. Far be it from me to start an argument, but let me ask a simple question of Republicans: So what? Lets say that you DO gain control of 2 of the branches of government. So what? Do you honestly think that will make a huge difference in the direction of the country? If you DO think that, please notice this huge pin that I am holding in my hand. Now -- hold out your balloon. America is like a huge ship with a screen door for a rudder. She dont turn easily or quickly. Even if the publicans could somehow win the presidency and a super majority in both houses, the country would not change appreciably because of this one thing: No matter what they say, the Republicans want essentially the same thing as the Democrats, that is, they want a huge government machine to preside over. You may argue that the Republicans would not be as extreme as the Democrats, but if theyre taking us to the same place, the speed at which we travel makes little difference. And even if the Republicans could be miraculously zapped with enough integrity to throw our screen door rudder hard to starboard, our momentum will still carry us perilously close to that rocky reef lying just below the surface on our port side. And so, my Republican friends, please vote your convictions in the next two national elections, but dont expect much from your grand old party. Our ship of state needs much more than the Republicans can supply. Our nation needs a bona fide miracle, and I know of only one source for miracles.
