I sent a email to Senator Udall asking about his position on the wild horses of Placitas and this is the reply he sent to me........October 2, 2014 Dear Ms. Hill, Thank you for contacting me regarding the horses located in Placitas, New Mexico. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue. Placitas has an abundance of horses that roam within the area. In 2013, some residents of Placitas voiced concerns about the horses overall well-being and contacted the New Mexico Livestock Board for assistance with the removal of horses on their property. Residents cited increased populations of horses that had outgrown land to support them, and whose health appeared to be in decline. A lawsuit was filed by the Wild Horse Observers Association (WHOA) asserting that the agency violated state law by treating the horses as stray livestock, rather than wild horses, and argued they should not be removed from private property. On July 16, 2014, a district judge ruled against WHOA, stating that the horses are not wild and therefore fall under state livestock laws. Recently, I, along with Senator Martin Heinrich and Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham, sent a letter to the New Mexico Director of BLM, Jesse Juen, asking him to engage and inform the public on recent efforts by the BLM, in conjunction with the Livestock Board, to develop a solution that would meet the humane needs of the Placitas horses, ensure sustainable land use, and respect the local community. Please rest assured that I will continue to monitor this issue and keep your thoughts in mind should any legislation regarding horses come before the full Senate for a vote.
