I serve on the board of The Mentoring Network. It is a school based mentoring program that involves meeting at school for one hour a week with a child. You dont have to know how to do anything other than just show up! We play games, we talk, we build with legos. . . . .stuff even I can handle! Yesterday when I went to school to meet with my little guy, I had been told that he had a very disappointing week. This would be in addition to all the other disappointments that he has had in his short life. You cant begin to imagine what these kids live through! However, I digress. . . . . . . I go to his room, we walk to our designated area and he is very quiet and withdrawn. I know some of the disappointing things that have happened in his little life, so I know for him to be so sullen, this one has to be a biggy. After playing Battleship for 20 minutes and talking and encouraging him to talk to me, he starts to smile and laugh and become his little chatterbox self again. You cannot begin to imagine the joy I felt and the sheer amazement that spending that one little hour out of my week could make such a difference to him! If you want to do something for yourself, mentor a child. It is a truly incredible experience and you will both be better for it!!! Really! It is so amazing! If you are interested, please contact me.
