I service clients in a low income building by offering discounted transportation services to the vet and groomer for their pets. Frankly, when I started servicing this particular building, I was looking at it as a business opportunity. It turned into something much bigger than that. These folks (some of them wheelchair bound) explained to me what a blessing my service was to them. It is very difficult and expensive for them obtain transportation to take their pets to the vet or groomer. It is not only taxing on them but their pets as well. These are people of little means who cherish their pets as family. They struggle to do so but they look to provide the best possible care for them. Last Wednesday I had a client from this building contact me to let me know that her service dog and companion of 14 years needed to be transported to the vet. Riley was no longer eating and was vomiting up bile. As soon as I arrived at the apartment, I knew Riley was not doing well. I transported Riley to the vet and upon examination the vet advised that she would call my client to discuss euthanasia as Riley was very ill and would probably not recover. My client, who has limited mobility, asked that I hold Riley during the process to make sure she was comfortable. Riley passed on peacefully and with dignity in my arms. My client wished to cremate Riley. That way her friend could always be with her. I know this is an expense my client cannot really afford. I have great respect for the care my client has worked to provide for Riley. My volunteer work with rescue has shown me many examples of dogs who were not so loved and cared for despite having owners with far more resources. With that in mind I am hoping to raise funds to help offset the cost of Riley’s cremation ($195) for my client. If anyone would like to help me in this endeavor it would be greatly appreciated. No amount is too small. Checks can be made out to Longo Pet Concierge (please put Riley in the memo field) and mailed to 6349 55th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33709. Thank you!
