I shared my thoughts on the movie, Noah, in church this morning - TopicsExpress

I shared my thoughts on the movie, Noah, in church this morning but several people have asked me to share my thoughts here, so..... Ill start with a couple of general thoughts before getting into specifics. After the general thoughts, there will be a spoiler alert so you can stop reading at that point. First, I would not characterize this movie as a movie about Noahs ark but a movie based on the story of Noahs ark. Second, I recommend you read the the story of Noah in the Bible before going to see the movie. This will give you a refresher on the true story by which you can compare and contrast the move. The story is found in the book of Genesis chapters 6 through 9. Most people can read it in 15 - 30 minutes. Third, I do not recommend taking children or very new Christians to this movie because it will raise many unnecessary questions and only cause confusion between the true story in the Bible and this movies embellishments. I read many reviews of the movie before seeing it. Its not quite as bad as some would have you believe but its not as harmless as others would have you believe. Okay...SPOILER ALERT....Stop reading here if you plan to see the movie. First, the Watchers. Watchers are the fallen angels left over when Lucifer was cast out of heaven. They were thrown down to earth and cursed and now look like walking, talking rocks. They help Noah build the ark and protect Noah and his family especially when the rains come and people try to enter the ark. In the end, as a reward for their service and repentance for their sin, they are set free from from their earthly existence and taken back to heaven. The Bible however says they are bound in hell and will experience eternal punishment. Second, The king of the land upon which Noah built the ark sneaks onto the ark and is aided by Ham (Noahs middle son), during the flood and nearly kills Noah. Third, the Bible says God found that only Noah and his family including his wife, 3 sons, and their wives were the only people on the face of the earth worthy of entering the ark. In the movie, however, only Noah, his wife, 3 sons and only Shems wife enter the ark (along with the evil king). The other 2 sons dont have wives in the movie. Shems wife becomes pregnant and gives birth to twin girls with the implication being that the other two sons will marry their nieces when they become of age and then repopulate the earth. Fourth, throughout the movie, Noah is under the impression that the reason God told him to build the ark was to save the animals, not mankind (which is the opposite of the Biblical account). Indeed, Noah is ready to kill the twin girls so that his sons cannot repopulate the earth. Fifth, the evilness of the world is portrayed well in the movie and Noahs account of the 6 days of creation is also told well. Sixth, you will also note that God is not mentioned by name at any time in the movie. Instead, He is referred to as Creator. Seventh, the evil king explains his philosophy of the superiority of man who doesnt need God (Im sorry, the Creator). He notes (correctly) that man was given dominion over all creatures on the earth. However, since this is mentioned by the evil protagonist, the implication is that man should worship the creation instead of the Creator. Yes, we should be caretakers and good stewards of Gods creation, but we dont worship the creation or exalt it higher than man. It is man that was created in the image of God, not the animals. Remember, we will judge angels one day. Otherwise, the technical aspects of the movie were okay. Ive seen better. It wont win any Oscars for special effects. So, this is really just a cursory review from a theological standpoint. I know some (many?) will disagree but once again, use the Bible as your guide to the truth.
