I slaughtered my first rooster yesterday. Ive helped my husband, but yesterday I did it 99% alone. (The other 1% accounted for him bringing the pot of hot water to the backdoor so I didnt have to go into the kitchen in muddy boots, and him giving me advice on where to open up the chicken to take out the innards). It was hard. It was my daughters favorite rooster and he was just a baby (11 weeks, but very noisy). We have 3 more just like him, but they dont crow yet, so I slapped some blue zip ties on another roosters leg and now he is Max. I dont know if my 7 year old will notice its not the real Max or not. Normally I would never deceive her like that, but she was having difficulty coming to terms with this, after a child at her school died over break, so I thought it wasnt time to deal with the mortality of her rooster this week. Rest in peace, Max. You were a good boy, even if you were noisy from 6 weeks onward. You had a happy life full of bugs, scratch grains, and cuddles. You will nourish our bodies this weekend so we can be strong and healthy and take good care of your sisters.
