I sometimes wonder how many people understand that a political party is a private organization. Its an association of like-minded individuals who voluntarily come together in an effort to have their interests represented in public policy. Those private associations choose people from among their number to put forward as candidates for public office, and those candidates are then submitted for consideration to the general public in the general election. The whole concept of a political party has become so bastardized over the years that a lot of people seem to think that the parties are just government agencies. It is absolutely absurd for a free people to turn control and regulation of the candidate nomination process over to government authority; which is exactly what happens in a primary election. Instead of being nominated by private citizens in a “we the people” manner, in a primary election system candidates for elective office are nominated by a process that is initiated, administered, regulated, controlled, and measured by elected officials; and ultimately a primary election process is accountable only to those elected officials. Talk about a classic case of inmates running the asylum. Its remarkable that in the space of not many years we have gone from merely losing a critical election to losing our voice entirely. I hope you will all participate in a caucus this year. This might be your last meaningful opportunity to do so.
