I spent over an hour talking with two elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, or Mormans, on my front steps just now. These earnest young men wanted to encourage me to keep searching for God despite my beginning our conversation by saying, There is no God. And, my reasonably articulate explanation of why I choose not to believe, how I would change in an instant if evidence were presented, and how happy I was in my atheism. They eventually backed away because they had to get home before dark. I thought, I saved my whole block of neighbors having to send these young men packing as I watched them stride purposely down the block without knocking on another door. Or, depending on your perspective, I prevented one of my neighbors from being converted to the LDS.
