I spent the morning with Dotty and Mike. Today is their 43rd Wedding Anniversary. I remember how I felt that day as if it were only a week ago. I CLEARLY remember looking down at her, she and Daddy, holding her arm on the back stairs of the First Methodist Church, they were coming up from the Social Hall and I was already up and ready to go into the sanctuary. She was beaming, Daddy was stiff, his obvious discomfort at anyone looking at him about to get the better of him. But I looked at them, she smiled, I began to cry and then we walked down the aisle, pipe organ blasting, and rows full of family and friends. After the troth was plighted we moved into the Fireside Room for the reception. The table was ready, cake, punch, mints and nuts...and coffee, of course. In those days it was standard fare to have a piece of cake to celebrate and it was QUITE enough. But Mother later said that it seemed like people were coming in off the street for cake, that she didnt feel there were quite that many people in the ceremony. Regardless of the number of attendees, there was enough cake, the top layer being wrapped and frozen for the first anniversary. I dont remember the reception, just the going away part...Dotty in a blue linen dress, white strappy sandals and her long, blonde hair pulled up away from her face in the front but hanging down her back, mike was probably wearing madras bermudas... and penny loafers. Anyway, 43 years later, they are still deeply devoted to each other and their future. Have a great rest of your day. Thanks for sharing part of it with me. I love you two crazy kids...
