I spent the weekend with a crowd of both young and seasoned activists whom are working diligently for social justice, specifically in regards to communities in central america whose lives have been affected by the presence of canadian mining companies. The theme was media and its role in portraying these stories to the general public with an emphasis on the importance of alternative media which, unlike the mainstream media, is not set in place to protect the vested interest of its corporate sponsors. The realities that are being deliberately concealed from us, the uneducated, are disheartening, to say the least. But, organizations like ARSN help to connect people to the opportunity to contribute to changing these policies, and inevitably the lives of those affected by them. Sometimes in learning these truths it becomes overwhelming, almost paralyzing, but really, every tiny bit of action does count for something. My fear has always been that I will one day be caught red handed doing nothing at all. So to break this trend, I am producing a radio show with Caper Radio which will consist of a compilation of interviews I did over the weekend. Tune in! I will also be going to Guatemala for 3 weeks in March on a human rights delegation to capture the experience on film and share it with you, and will probably be inviting you to a fundraising show in February. End Rant.
