I spent this fourth as another proud son of New England, Benjamin - TopicsExpress

I spent this fourth as another proud son of New England, Benjamin Franklin, spent the 1st anniversary of the 4th of July, in Paris. I am often critical of our country and its politic. My more global perspective makes me often cynical of what might come of it ultimately. I am, however, aware of what it means to be an American. These four years away from home have taught me well that, though we have much to learn, we have much to teach. Four years ago I never would have fought some of the battles for reason that I now fight often in common conversation. We have much to be proud of as a people. A people who in the past have welcomed the starving, who have fought oppression, and have borne the weight of our own lack of integrity in the bloody bonds of civil war. Would that we all in our own personal lives bear the wounds and victories of the corporate life that ennobles us as a people. Would that we would fight for the integral liberation of all peoples. I am grateful to my French Jesuit brothers, who made tonight as much of an American Barbecue for me as they could simply for me. I detest my prejudice before being here, because of hospitality, a true Gospel value that destroys all silliness of our own cupidity and pulls us forth to who we are called by God to be. God Bless America. Fada beo an stáit aontaithe. Viva Gli Stati Uniti.Vive les Etats-Unis. This is who I am, this is the true soil from which I spring. However, as a son of the Kingdom, I cry long live liberty.. the value for which so many of our fathers and grandfathers fought and died for, and which has yet to be realized in so much of the world, this is the true value from which every human soul springs. This is our work as Americans. This is our call.
