I started playing for church meetings when I was eleven, first the piano, then the organ. We sang one hymn for three weeks while I learned a second one, then we alternated until I learned a third. With only a few breaks, I have played the organ ever since--for Priesthood, Relief Society,Mutual, and Primary, as well as serving as choir organist, ward organist, and stake organist. That first time was 55 years ago. I had always imagined myself tottering up to the console at some advanced age, old and decrepit but still playing. I didnt take into account deafness. Today, after more than half a century, I was released as organist, and I doubt that I will play very much hereafter. It hurts too much to realize how much I cant hear, to play a line or more into a hymn Ive known all my life, and still not recognize any of the notes. But--and its a huge BUT--how can I help but be thankful for all of that time, for all of the opportunities to serve, for all of the chances to share. Playing has helped define much of my life, and I would be ungrateful if I didnt acknowledge a huge debt to every congregation, every assembly. Thanks to all who listened, who sang, who seemed to enjoy. It was a life-long pleasure.
