I started this list a few days ago, Lauren, then lost my work before I finished. Like George, I have one of those 25 Things lists somewhere. I havent revisited it in years, so Im hoping (but wont swear) these are all new factoids: 1.) I grew up in the Northeastern U.S. (MA, NY, PA, CT), but I was born in northern California. So were my daughters. 2.) I sometimes sing in the shower, and Science Fiction Double Feature from the Rocky Horror Picture Show may be my favorite number. My limited range fits it well. Every time I sing it, I think to myself that I should try to see all the movies name-checked in the song, but I always forget by the time I dry off. I think King Kong and The Day The Earth Stood Still are the only ones Ive seen. I hear Forbidden Planet is good ... 3.) Comic books were a big part of my youth, but I was underwhelmed by every superhero movie I saw until the first Iron Man flick -- and I never even liked Iron Man comics much when I was a kid. 4.) Before I got into comic *books* -- even before I could really read -- I was hooked on comic strips. I loved Peanuts; paperbacks of old strips were among the first real books I read -- and they taught me words like anxiety, security, and failure, along with blockhead and punter. I was also a big fan of Bloom County, and of course, Calvin and Hobbes, but I habitually read everything on the comics page except the soap opera strips (Rex Morgan, Mary Worth, at al.). My habit eventually lapsed after I stopped working at newspapers (and subscribing to one), but lately, thanks to Rick Stromoski, Ive rediscovered the joys of daily comics, online. I read Ricks strip, Soup to Nutz, plus Doonesbury and Dick Tracy (which was taken over in recent years by Joe Staton, an artist I admired in my comic book days). I like that its easy to catch up online if I miss a few days installments, and its cool that even the daily strips appear in color on the web. 5.) Back when the S.F. Giants still played at Candlestick Park (and when Candlestick Park was still called that) I stood on the infield there before a game and helped display part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. 6.) McDonalds Bacon Egg & Cheese sandwiches are a secret vice, and Im grateful they arent available all day long. 7.) I love live music, and since my return to CT six years ago, Ive tapped -- with guidance from Anne-Marie -- into a thriving (if underappreciated) local scene. The players around here -- and some of the songwriters as well -- are as good as anyone, anywhere. (Im talking about you, Brett, Dennis, Matt, Bill, Mark, Andre, Jimmy, and Mark Mercier.) 8.) I survived the disco era, and really hated it when it was happening. But two recent experiences -- catching Earth Wind & Fire at an industry conference(!) and having a DJ include Boogie Oogie Oogie in an extended mix at my nieces wedding -- have made me reconsider. Youll still never catch me doing the Hustle, but I guess disco wasnt all bad.
