I stumbled across this page by accident but what a lovely surprise it re- introduced me to an era that was such a part of me but now seems so distant. I went to Jenner street were Miss Burt was the headmistress, who was then followed by Miss Powdley....who was my favourite. After leaving St Pats infants I moved across to Hyslop St and was terrified when I saw Mr O Boyle whack a kid with a leather strap for the first time. The kid was lined up in front of the school assembly and the punishment was dealt out like a public execution, no doubt Monsenior Curry was watching with Father Gougherty. I got the Cain off Mr Price once for something I never did, and was also made to bend over by Mr Scott - who then smacked my backside so hard it catapulted me practically the whole length of the top corridor in St Pats....again for something I never did. Failed the 11 plus (which was fixed) because nobody passed from our school that year and I was the cleverest kid in the school according to my school report. I remember picking my kid brother and sister from school at dinner times and queuing up at Cousins for the stale cakes, and at the age of 9, I walked them home to Geraint Street to share the cakes out for dinner. To get in the house my mum had given me a front door key which hung around my neck all day, on a piece of rope that could have landed the Royal Iris - happy days! I built up a company with my brother called Willy Wiper we began trading 30 years ago in the shadow of St Pats church. Some might remember that Prince Charles stopped by once to say hello. My name is Mark Wray - if anyone remembers me it would be nice to say hi.
