I stumbled across this while dicking around at YouTube: a sympathetic 1990 TV profile of Anita Bryant that seems to be half-heartedly priming the pump for a comeback. Its a piece of entertainment-journalism fluff put together by people trying to kill five minutes of airtime and who have no particular feelings about what theyre babbling about, but even so: in describing Bryant as a celebrity who suffered some career reversals as a result of taking a public stand on something she believed in, it explicitly equates her with Ed Asner and his criticism of the Reagan administrations policy in Central America. (It also equates her with Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave, which mostly just puts into perspective on how much of a loss to the collective culture it is when Anita Bryant has trouble finding work. The more obvious comparison might be to Brother Dave Gardner, but Pat OBrien may not have known who that was.) The report also repeatedly says that Bryants efforts to make herself the public face of homophobia made her the enemy of the gay community, instead of the enemy of everyone who isnt into legalized discrimination. Like I say, its just a little placeholder from 24 years ago, no big deal. But watching it made me feel that 1990 was practically another world, which isnt a feeling I get when I remember that some of the people I know werent even born yet then.
