I submit that the 1994 democratic breakthrough, with all its deformed features, was not a miracle but rather a necessary outcome of a protracted and painful interplay between that which had to go and that which had to emerge. To me the miracle remains the continual co-existence between our good story and the immense anger, depression and abnormalities that daily manifest themselves in ficksburg and marikana, in the brutal rapes and murders of women and children, of families who go to bed without anything to eat. I speak here of a democratic South Africa where the overwhelming majority of young people are as unemployed as they are hopeless AND yet they still manage to wake up with a smile and proudly say in the ANC we believe. These are brothers and sisters of my blood and soul, they in whose anger and bitterness libraries, clinics and church buildings suffer the wrath of petrol bombs and yet they will still fill FNB stadium the next day courtesy of our Siyanqoba rally. I speak with the greatest of respect to this miracle, the miracle of continual co-existence between hope and hopelessness, between my opulence and her devastation, between my VIP status in our everyday functions and his pariah status in the mineral endowed land of his fore bearers. And I submit, in paying my respect, Nkosi sikelel aforika !
